Stainless duplex steel, or simply, duplex steel is a form of metal made from the combination of ferritic and austenitic stainless steel grains. It contains a microstructure with 2 phases, one being the austenitic phase (which has the molecular structure of chromium and nickel ), and the other being the ferritic phase or mode (having the micromolecular structure of pure chromium). molybdenum and nitrogen molecules are also added for increased metal strength.
These components give the duplex steel a number of significant advantages over other kinds of stainless steel, mostly the regular austenitic or ferritic stainless steel forms.
This type of metal\’s first and clearest advantage over other metals of its type is the fact that it is significantly stronger, even two times as strong as standard austenitic or ferritic metals. And it is all due to its specific molecular structure and added nitrogen content.
This type of metal\’s resistance to tensile stress or cracking is another key advantage, with it having considerably higher levels of ductile strength over that of ferritic grade stainless metal. But it still has a long way to go when contrasted against the superior ductility of austenitic metal grades.
This particular kind of steel is mostly used in marine services and pipings because of another important attribute, and this is its high corrosion resistance, or the ability to resist the corrosive effects of the various elements within a marine environment.
This stainless steel\’s excellent performance against stress corrosion could be attributed to its one of a kind two phase structure, ferritic components, and increased chromium and molybdenum content. While its increased resistance to pitting corrosion is really a trait brought about by the combined strengths of molybdenum, nitrogen, and chromium.
Duplex steel is produced in varying grades and different alloy compositions based on the required levels of anti-corrosive components. Some examples of the grades are; super duplex, hyper duplex, standard duplex, and lean duplex.
From piping systems in sea water environments, to passenger and transport ships, to offshore rigs, as well as in the assembly of a luxury yacht, these unique metals are considered as the workhorse of metal works for the marine setting.
