The locks on your doors and windows are one of the first things to consider when evaluating your home\’s security level. The typical locks that come on exterior doors are not very strong. In fact, a burglar who is strong can bust right through the door and gain entry into your home. And many of these locks can be opened with a credit card.
Fixing weak and ineffective door locks is not hard though. Just go to your local hardware store and purchase dead bolts for all of your exterior doors. These are very strong and it is unlikely that a thief will be able to bust through it. However, always store the keys near the dead bolts. It would be a tragedy to be trapped inside your home if a fire broke out, simply because you could not find the key!
Window locks are important as well. Check all the windows on your house to see if they are working correctly. You may even want to test them yourself: can you force any of the locked windows open? If you can, then a thief can too. Repair any locks that do not work, and change the weak ones.
You will also want to work on your fire system if it is not efficient. Consider replacing individual smoke detectors with a hard wired, interconnected system. They are much better, because if one smoke detector beeps, they will all beep with it.
