Wangaratta is an idyllic town in the centre of north-east Victoria on the main route between Melbourne and Sydney. The largest jazz event in Australia takes place in Wangaratta every year on the weekend before the first Tuesday of November when the Melbourne cup takes place. 90 events attract 350 musicians from around the country and the world and there are also important workshops and related events that take place across the region. The main commercial centre in the town is located on Murphy Street and the adjacent Reid Street. Ford and Ovens Street are home to the cultural attractions. These include the Anglican Holy Trinity Cathedral, St. Patrick\’s Church and the Exhibitions Gallery built in 1865. The Playhouse Theatre features a front lawn full of sculpted figurines.

There is also King George the V Gardens which is cultivated in and English style and Merriwa Park that has bush paths, a lagoon and other water features.
Food and wine lovers will delight in the surrounding regions which are dedicated to producing gourmet offerings. They have teamed up to create the first gourmet region in Australia centred around Milawa. There are culinary events which are held and even hiking tours where one can explore the vineyards and find the local produce along the way.
The region also offers many other activities ranging from fishing to bushwalks as well as cycling and off-road trails. One can go skiing in the mountains and there are resorts at Mt Hotham and Mt Buffalo or Falls Creek. There is plenty of accommodation in Wangaratta and the surrounding area that ranges from family motels to self contained apartments.
