A Brief Guide To Independent Schools

The quality and number of Independent Schools in Qatar has been improving. This affluent Middle Eastern country is aiming to compete with Western standards in all aspects of society. So it stands to reason that there are numerous excellent educational choices available for both the elementary and secondary grades.

The term K-12 education was coined to describe education that extends to both primary and secondary grades. It is a handy abbreviation for describing the educational requirements for kindergarten through twelfth grade schooling. The term is used when referring to education for children between the ages of four and sixteen.

What is unique about these institutions is that they are independently funded. They do not require state or national funding as they receive endowments from trust funds or organizations. As such they are autonomous and self-regulating and are often termed private institutions.

This country is in a unique position with its extreme oil wealth and open views. The population is quite small in comparison and the infrastructure is quite developed. As a result, there are many excellent institutions of learning to be found here.

Education throughout the country is overseen by the government instituted Supreme Educational Council. This body takes responsibility for maintaining uniform educational and accreditation standards throughout the country. Although some instruction is still given in Arabic, the Council hopes to establish a fully English language curriculum shortly.

The main educational systems, both the British and American, are available here. These are taught in cooperation with the national Arabic curriculum. Members of the foreign community and Qataris both can attend these educational institutions.

There is a wide range of independent schools in qatar that enjoy quality curriculum equivalent to that found in the West. With a major emphasis on English language curriculum, graduates will have no problem matriculating to colleges abroad. Efforts are being made to upgrade the teaching staff and standardize credential requirements.
